Towel GSM for Beauty Centers: Which One to Choose
09 July 2026
300, 400, 500 g/m². Which GSM is right for your treatment room? And for a spa? Let's find out.
Those who come to us to buy bath linen for beauty centers and spas usually arrive with one question: what GSM should a good towel be? It is a completely valid question, but it often leads to the wrong choices. GSM, or grams per square meter, is simply the weight of one square metre of fabric. It is just one of the parameters to consider when evaluating a towel or bath sheet, and on its own it will not tell you whether a product is genuinely high quality. Here’s why.
High GSM Is Not Always an Advantage
GSM measures fabric density: the number of grams of fiber per square metre. What GSM cannot tell you is the fabric structure, the quality of the cotton used, the consistency of the weave, or how the product will hold up under repeated industrial washing. A high-GSM towel can feel impressive in your hands, but if it is made from short-staple cotton it will lose its absorbency within a few months. A medium-GSM towel made from selected cotton with a controlled weave, on the other hand, will stay soft and absorbent for years.
Very high GSM, anything above 500 g/m², can also be a practical disadvantage in spas and beauty centers: it means slower drying times and a heavier load on washing machines, which translates into significantly higher energy consumption.
Which GSM to Choose for Each Use
While GSM is not the only factor, when choosing bath linen for a treatment room our recommendation is to look at the 300–400 g/m² range. This is where you find the best balance between quick drying, lightness in use, and efficient laundry management.
For the Tramilde ready-to-ship line, we chose 360 g/m² for the majority of our towels, bath sheets, and accessories: the sweet spot between softness, ease of use, and fast drying. We opted for 400 g/m² for the shawl collar bathrobe, where the denser fabric delivers the enveloping comfort that spa and wellness center guests expect.
It Is the Weaver Who Makes the Difference, Not the GSM
Behind every technical specification there is a production process, and the quality of professional terry cloth has to be assessed as a whole, not just by the number on the label.
If you are looking for quality terry cloth, do not stop at GSM. Evaluate the fiber: long-staple cotton produces a more resistant, more absorbent fabric than short-staple cotton. Consider the precision of the weave: only a controlled weaving process creates uniform density across the entire surface, with no weak spots that wear out first. And make sure the end result is safe on skin, produced from selected raw materials using controlled, sustainable processes.
At Tramilde, every product is made in our facility near Milan, and that is exactly what makes the difference. A vertically integrated supply chain, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification, selected yarns, and IDH dyes (a controlled dyeing process that prevents color loss) are just some of the production standards that guarantee professional linen built to withstand frequent washing without losing its quality.
